Free Your Mind Monday…

One of the items on my 101 list is to answer the 50 Questions That Will Free Your Mind. It was one of the first things I started, but over a year later and I still haven’t gotten through all of them. So I’ve decided to answer them here…5 each Monday for the next ten weeks. This way it will force me to finish…and it will give me a guaranteed topic for Monday mornings when I have trouble getting my brain working.

Here are the first 5…

1. How old would you be if you didn’t know how old you are?

It depends on the day.  Sometimes I feel like I’m 100 years old.  Today, for example…I slept funny on my arm and it hurts every time I move it.  And I have a terrible pain in my back.  Days like these I feel like I’m ancient.

But then there are other days where I feel like a kid still and think “I cannot possibly be an adult…I cannot possibly be older than 15…how did this happen?”  On these days I often spend time doing something very childish…like making inappropriate “that’s what she said” jokes and giggling like an idiot.

Either way…I very rarely feel like I’m 36…which is how old I actually am.

2. Which is worse, failing or never trying?

Never trying, for sure.  I mean…yes, failing sucks.  No one wants to fail.  But at least if you try, you have the potential to eventually succeed.  If you give up before you even get started you’ll never know if success was possible or what you are capable of.  You should always try…and if you fail, you should try again.

3. If life is so short, why do we do so many things we don’t like and like so many things we don’t do?

I think it’s because we don’t fully grasp how short life is.  Time goes really fast and sometimes you don’t realize it.  In the moment, you find yourself doing things that are expected of you or things you HAVE to do…like going to work.  I know that I always think things like “Oh…I’m so busy now…I’ll just get tickets for that concert next time they come to town” or “This is really not a good day…I’ll just see my friend another day”.  I always think that there will be plenty of time.  I’m only now starting to realize that there isn’t plenty of time.  We are all so busy all the time…we forget that we have to stop and slow down sometimes.

4. When it’s all said and done, will you have said more than you’ve done?

If it was all said and done tomorrow…yes, I will have said more than I will have done.  Like I said above…I tend to put things off until tomorrow.  I have big plans, but I let so many things get in the way of those plans.  I love my 101 list for that reason…it’s forcing me to accomplish things I’ve been putting off for years.  It’s forcing me to slow down and do things that make me happy.  It’s been a great lesson.  I really hope that it’s not all said and done tomorrow…because I have faith that I can turn things around.  I have faith that someday, when it is all over, I will be able to smile and say that I did everything.

5. What is the one thing you’d most like to change about the world?

I would love to make people more accepting of one another.  There is so much hate and so much intolerance.  I wish people could just embrace those things that make us all different.  Those are the things that make the world an interesting place.  In my perfect world…people would celebrate their differences…they would learn from each other…they would find ways to get along.  I think it would be a much happier world.

Is anyone else taking on the 50 questions?  Do you find that some of them are really hard to answer???

Spring cleaning…

On Friday, it was 75 degrees.  I wore a short-sleeved dress with no tights and only a light jacket in the morning.  I kept the window open in my office all day long.

Today it’s 36 degrees and a little while ago we were having snow flurries.  More snow is predicted for Wednesday.

Welcome to spring in NY!

But I can’t complain.  The weekend was gorgeous and the dogs and took a lot of walks around the neighborhood.  I’d rather have that great weather on the weekend and this nasty weather while I’m at work.  And, technically, it’s now spring so the nice weather will soon be here to stay.

Speaking of spring…it was pointed out to me over the weekend that it’s been a while since I crossed something off my 101 List and I thought my first post of spring was a good time to give you all an update on my progress.

While it’s true that I haven’t finished anything recently, I have a lot of items that are “in progress”…

3.  Give a microloan through – I did this the same week I started the list.  I made two small loans of $25 each.  Now…8 months later, both have been repaid.  As of this morning, I put another $50 into my account and made two more loans of $50 each.  It’s such a great program and I encourage anyone to give it a try.

18. Crochet an afghan using the yarn in the closet. – Over the years I’ve collected lots of yarn…some leftover from other projects and some that I just never got around to using.  I keep it in a big box in the closet and I’ve moved that box from one apartment to another to another and now to our house.  I refuse to move the damn box again.  So I’m determined to use up the yarn and I have a few projects planned.  I’ve started the first, which is a afghan.  I chose an iffy color combination and now I’m not sure if I like how it’s turning out.  I might start over.  Either way…I hope to have pictures soon.

19. Refinish a piece of furniture. – I’m in the process of refinishing my kitchen table and chairs.  It’s a very retro set that used to be my mother’s.  It started out yellow and I repainted it white and covered the chairs with a purple silk when I lived by myself.  J hates the colors and they don’t really go in the new house.  So I am refinishing the wood top in a rich chocolate color and the rest will be painted a creamy almond color.  I haven’t chosen fabric for the chairs yet, but I want a really nice, soft brown fabric.  I’ve started sanding down the top and getting it ready for painting and staining.  Again…I hope to have pictures soon.

29.  Drink 64 ounces of water for 64 days straight. – As part of my Lent promise, I am supposed to be drinking 64 ounces of water each day.  I’ve definitely been drinking more water than usual, but I haven’t made it to 64 ounces quite yet.  But I’m determined to reach that goal each day this week.  The trick is going to be to keep it going over the weekend.

31.  Reach my goal weight and stay there. – As you know, I started Jenny Craig three and a half weeks ago.  As of last Wednesday’s official weigh-in, I’ve lost 9 pounds!  Unofficially, according to my bathroom scale, I’m on track for another 2 pound loss this week.  Already, I’m starting to feel better and notice a difference in some of my clothes.  My brother thought last week that I’d said I had fit into my skinny jeans.  Not the case…not by a long shot.  However, I’m definitely fitting into my “less-fat” jeans.  It’s a start and I’ll take it!

52.  Answer the 50 questions that will free your mind. – I thought this one would be a piece of cake.  I figured I’d sit down for an hour or two and answer them all.  Yeah…not so much.  Obviously from the title, these are questions that force you to think.  I’ve also been trying to be really honest with myself in figuring out my answers…because otherwise, what’s the point of doing it.  So it’s been taking me a while.  I’ve answered 17 so far and I’m keeping my answers in a journal.  I worked on it for a bit on Saturday and after an hour of staring at a blank page, I decided I need to think about #18 a little longer before I answer it.

61. Purchase a 1 year subscription to the lottery. – I actually purchased two…one for regular NYS Lotto and one for MegaMillions.  So far, I’ve won $7.  If I hit the big one, you all will surely be among the first to know.

68.  Watch all the movies in my Netflix queue. – I started out with 389 and I’ve seen 74 so far.  I was looking over the list yesterday and I think I have to make some edits.  There seem to be quite a few terrible movies on that list and I’ve got too much to do to waste time watching garbage.

72.  Read 100 books. – I’m very happy to report that I started #20 this morning.  I’m going to have this one finished in no time.

That’s what I’m working on right now.  The next items I’m going to tackle are…

17. Comment on every blog I read for a week.

39. Study something completely new.

45. Keep my inbox empty for 1 month.

I’ll be sure to report back and let you know how I’ve done.

Anyone else start a list recently?  What kinds of things would you put on your list, if you had one?
