Random Musings Friday…

I haven’t had much time to blog this week…what, with all the yoga and everything.  No…I’m kidding.  I’m still not doing yoga.  But I am in a somewhat better mood today.  And I’m very excited for the weekend.  I’m also excited for today’s random musings…

  • I saw a guy yesterday wearing a shirt that said “I am awesome”.  I loved it.  I think I’m going to get a shirt like that and wear it to sleep every night…this way I can wake up each morning, look in the mirror and remember just how awesome I am.  I wonder where he got it.
  • The other day a woman sat down next to me on the train and she pulled out a little package of bread sticks.  When she finished the first package, she pulled out another and another.  For 40 minutes she ate  bread stick after bread stick.  I was dying to look inside her purse for the seemingly endless supply of little plastic packages.  Ever since I’ve been considering carrying around my own stash.
  • I was watching some Four Weddings on TLC the other day and the four brides on this episode were located in NY and NJ.  One of the women was Southern and she had relocated to NJ to be with her husband.  During the wedding she did something and another of the brides commented “Wow…NJ has really rubbed off on her!”  The speaker meant this as a compliment.  Hmmm…NJ is the land of Snookie and The Situation and strip malls galore.  I’m pretty sure that NJ rubbing off is never a compliment.
  • Speaking of reality TV…I’ve been noticing that when people from NY are on reality TV it’s always the worst possible example of what New Yorkers are really like.  No wonder everyone always thinks we are a bunch of idiots with think accents who say things like Fuggetaboutit.  Please trust me that we aren’t all like that!
  • And lastly…my favorite.  When I went to Atlanta last week, I arrived at the airport and I couldn’t help but overhear the woman next to me speaking to the agent.  Her flight was leaving at 5:25.  It was 5:15.  The agent was telling her that she had to rebook as she’d missed her flight.  She was shocked.  She kept insisting that her ticket said she only had to arrive at the airport ten minutes prior to the flight.  They managed to get her on my flight, which left two hours later and she told everyone who would listen that they never told her you had to get to the airport early.  It amazed me that people don’t check these things.

Well…that’s it for this week.  I hope you all have a great weekend.  Now grab the button and link up below…

Random Musings Friday…

It’s been a really cranky week for me.  It usually is the week before a vacation…there always seems to be so much to do and never enough time to get it all done.  So when I sat down to write my random musings and I looked at my notes, I saw that they were all negative and whiny and bitchy.  I really didn’t want negative and whiny and bitchy for this post.

You see…today is post #500.  When I started this blog two and a half years ago, 500 was never a number I thought I’d see.  And the fact that I’ve reached this milestone…well, to celebrate it by being negative didn’t feel right.  It’s something that should be celebrated with happiness and good things.

So instead of posting my random musings this week, I’m taking this time to say thank you!

Thank you so much to all of you who come here every day and read what I’ve written.  I still find it amazing that people take time out of their days to come here to see what I’ve got to say…and to comment on it.  Reading your comments is seriously the highlight of my day!  I’ve met so many great people through this blog and I’ve made so many wonderful friends.  Thank you all for coming back again and again.  I’m so grateful for all of you.

And that’s about all I have to say this week.  I’m off to Atlanta this afternoon, where I might melt in the 108 degree heat.  But I’m very excited to see Ally and help celebrate her baby shower.  I will be Tweeting pictures of the festivities…so if you are interested, make sure you follow me on Twitter and look for the #TeamEverett Tweets.

Just because I didn’t have any random musings this week doesn’t mean I don’t want to hear yours.  So link up below and tell me what’s been random in your life this week!  Have a great weekend everyone!

Random Musings Friday…

This might have been the longest week ever.  It seriously felt like it was 16 days long.  But it’s finally Friday and I’m looking forward to the weekend.  But first…some random musings…

  • The other morning we had a different train conductor.  Most of the regular guys wear baggy uniforms and sneakers and generally look like bums.  This guy had on tight pants, dress shoes and his shirt was unbuttoned about three buttons.  His hair was perfectly coiffed and he was extremely well put together.  He looked like he was about to step off the train and into 2001 Odyssey…the nightclub in Saturday Night Fever.  I had to giggle a little…but it was kind of nice to see a conductor take such an interest in his appearance…even if he appeared to be stuck in the disco era.
  • Speaking of odd outfits…when I got my car washed last weekend, I noticed that one of the guys there was also not dressed like the others.  He was wearing super tight and super short shorts, a white polo shirt with a popped collar and white framed sunglasses.  It was almost like he stepped off the set of Miami Vice and into a NY car wash.  My description doesn’t do his outfit justice, so here’s a picture…
  • It was definitely a week of strange outfits.  Or in this case…strange body art.  I was walking behind a woman on Park Avenue the other day and she was one of the most beautiful women I’ve ever seen.  Her outfit, hair and makeup were absolutely perfect.  And she had this on her leg…
Now…I have no problem with tattoos.  I have one myself.  What I found odd was the image…a topless mermaid with a TV instead of a head.  It just really struck me as an odd choice…and I wanted so badly to ask for the story behind it.  But I don’t have the nerve to just walk up to a stranger and ask that question.  So I guess I’ll never know.
  • I had to call one of my boss’s attorneys the other day and I really dread talking to the guy.  He’s super nice, but he speaks so slowly that it’s like torture.  I always want to yell “SPIT IT OUT!!!”.  What I realized during this particular conversation is that he must be speaking slowly on purpose.  I mean…he does bill for his time.  If he can drag out a five minute conversation to fifteen minutes by speaking slowly…well, that’s just more billing for him.  I think from now on, I’m going to send emails.  Then I can read them at whatever pace I want.
  • A friend of mine posted something to Facebook yesterday and it made me smile so much, I decided to end today’s post with it.  I know it’s annoying to have to click through to something else…but this is worth it.

Happy Friday.  Now…grab the button and link up below and tell me your random of the week…

Random Musings Friday…

Wow…I actually posted every day this week!  That hasn’t happened in a while.  I guess I had a lot to say.

And now…here’s some more…

  • As I’m writing this, Sofie is laying behind me and I can feel her feet moving.  She must be dreaming.  I love when the dogs dream…when the wag their tails and “run”.  I get worried when they whimper that they are scared or upset.  But, usually, I imagine their dreams are really awesome.  I imagine they are chasing squirrels and running around the back yard and having a fun old time.  Maybe someday they’ll learn how to talk and they can finally tell me about their dreams.
  • Speaking of Sofie…I’m starting to think we have ghosts in the house.  Sometimes she will sit and stare at nothing…like the corner or some empty space.  The other day she was staring at the front of the dresser in the bedroom.  Last night, she sat on the floor and looked up at an empty space on the couch for ten minutes.  I wonder is she’s just spacing out or if she’s seeing someone there.  As long as they are friendly ghosts I guess it’s ok.
  • Sometimes I walk around the city and the characters I see are priceless.  I wonder what people are thinking when they leave the house.  One of these days, I’m going to get the nerve to start walking around with my camera and capture pictures of these gems for posterity…and blogging, of course.
  • Lately, people have been walking into me on the street.  It happens at least once per day…and I don’t get it.  I mean, I’m short, but I’m not that short.  I’m chalking it up to tourists running around the city and not paying attention to their surroundings.  However, if it keeps up, I’m going to start believing that I’m invisible or something.
  • The other night, J made me dinner…just a casserole with chicken and noodles.  It was very simple…but it was totally delicious.  I couldn’t stop eating it.  Of course…now J thinks he’s ready to be on Iron Chef.  But if it means he’ll cook more and I can cook less…I guess I win!  And it really was just delicious.

Well…that’s my week in review.  I’m looking forward to a very nice weekend of good weather, relaxation and going to the movies with my family on Father’s Day.  Happy Father’s day to all the dads out there…and I wish everyone a fabulous weekend.

Random Musings Friday…

I had planned to post a little more often this week…and I did manage to post on Wednesday over at From The Sidelines.  However, I never managed to get here.  Robyn, Phil and I have been running around all week, seeing the sights of NY and eating a lot…and also getting rained on.  There’s just not enough time in the day to do everything and still write a post.  So…sorry for my disappearance.  I’ll be back next week.

And of course, I couldn’t forget this week’s random musings…

  • Last week, I wrote an email to a friend from work.  I signed it “xoxo” as I always do.  Then I immediately sent an email to a work colleague who had just done me a huge favor…and I almost signed that one “xoxo” as well.  Luckily, I stopped myself in time and used the more professional “Many Thanks”.  I really have to be careful of that in the future.
  • The weather in NY this week has been really crappy.  It’s rained pretty much every single day.  We’ve been checking Accuweather often before we go out so we can dress appropriately for the weather…and it has been wrong pretty much every day.  Yesterday, as we stood in the middle of a downpour, Accuweather told me the current weather conditions were “slightly foggy”.  Accuweather is a lying bitch.
  • And speaking of rain…I’ve learned something this week.  You can be very careful to avoid every puddle in sight.  You can walk for blocks and blocks without actually getting your feet wet.  However, there will be a time that you will look away for one second and that is the second in which you will step directly into a puddle.  This will usually happen just before you reach your destination.
  • I personally like to think that NYers are nice and friendly and helpful and that our reputation as rude assholes is undeserved.  However, this week, I have seen more and more evidence that rude assholes are winning.  An example…we ate lunch at Shake Shack, which has extremely limited indoor seating.  There were tons of people standing around waiting for tables…and this woman, sitting alone at a table for four, was clearly done with her lunch.  She was just sitting there, texting someone or something.  For ten minutes.  She didn’t have a single care that there were people with trays full of food waiting to sit down.  She just kept right on with what she was doing.  It was so obnoxious and I wanted to yell at her for giving NYers a bad name.
  • And speaking of rude…we were on the subway and it was getting a little crowded.  The nasty woman sitting next to us had pushed me out of the way in order to secure her seat and was getting annoyed at how crowded the car was getting.  There were still a few seats when a pregnant woman got on.  She sat down in the small seat next to the nasty woman.  She must have been squished up against the nasty woman making her uncomfortable, because she decided to stand up.  Then the nasty woman proceeded to glare angrily at the pregnant woman for the rest of the trip.  I guess she expected the very pregnant woman to stand up so she wouldn’t be inconvenienced.  Some people’s rudeness just amazes me.

Well…that’s it for me this week.  I’ve got to go get ready for a very busy day…we’re going on the NBC Studio Tour and taking a stroll through Central Park and tonight we are going to a Breaking Bad themed dinner.  It should be a really fun day…if only it would just stop raining!

Random Musings Friday…

I was a bit of a slacker this week when it came to taking notes.  I’m expecting some guests this weekend and I’ve been busy running around all week, trying to get my house ready.  Tons of things happened that made me think “that is perfect for Friday’s post” and then I hurried off to the next task and never wrote anything down.

So this week, instead of my usual random musings…I am going to give you the five random lessons I learned this week…

  • If you want something done right, do it yourself.  This is probably a lesson I should have learned a long time ago, but I continually give people the benefit of not being total idiots.  That usually backfires on me.  This week, this lesson hit home so many times that I’ve finally learned it for good.  No one is going to do things exactly the way you would and if it’s really that important to you…just do it yourself.  Or risk seeing your favorite dress thrown in the dryer and shrunken down to American Girl Doll size.
  • No matter how sad or mad or frustrated you are…a little puppy love will cheer you right up.  I came home from work in a foul mood the other night and I was cranky and pissy.  Then I watched the saddest show on television.  When the dogs know I’m upset, the give me kisses.  Those kisses made me forget my annoying day and made me forget why I was so sad.
  • Perseverance pays off.  This week, a man graduated from Columbia University.  He came to this country from Albania in the 1990’s and got a job at the university as a janitor.  For six years, he took classes part-time to learn English.  Then he started taking classes toward his degree.  It took him 20 years, but he did it.  He has his degree now and he’s going to go on for a master’s.  That’s dedication.  I think we can all learn something from him.
  • Doing simple favors for people earns you serious gratitude.  There was a large family meeting going on in my office yesterday.  One of the attorneys we work with needed something signed by someone in that meeting.  It’s not generally accepted to interrupt meetings like that.  No one wanted to do it.  But this attorney has done me big favors before, so I took a deep breath and knocked on the door.  I got the forms signed and now…the attorney is supremely grateful…and probably willing to help me out the next time I need a favor.  Everyone wins.

And lastly…I have the most important lesson of all…

  • Cupcakes are better than Prozac.  I was in a seriously shitty mood on Wednesday.  Everything and everyone was annoying me.  So I decided to have the salted caramel cupcake I mentioned in my last post.  I took one bite and the tension just melted away.  By the time I was finished eating the cupcake my shoulders were relaxed and I had a big smile on my face.  It was probably a sugar high…but just taking a few minutes away from the annoying stuff and enjoying my delicious treat was enough to change my whole mood.  It wasn’t as good as puppy kisses, but it was damn close!

There you have it…5 random lessons I learned this week.  I don’t know if I’m going to be around much next week.  I have a very full week planned…trying to show my two favorite Canadians how awesome NY is in an effort to convince them to move here for good.  It probably won’t work, but I’m sure we’ll have fun anyway.  But I’ll definitely be back next Friday for Random Musings…so make sure you stop by.

Random Musings Friday…

I really enjoy the weeks that fly by.  This was one of those weeks.  I can’t believe it’s time for Random Musings Friday again.  What’s even better is that tomorrow is Saturday…the second Saturday that I have nothing to do and get to lay around in my pajamas and nap.  What’s even better than that is that next Saturday I will be going to the airport to pick up Robyn and Phil.  I’m so excited…I haven’t seen them since August and we have a really fun week planned.

So…I’m not going to waste any more time…because the faster today goes, the closer I am to tomorrow and next weekend…

  • Did I mention “tan mom” on here?  For those of you that don’t know, she’s a mom from NJ who is so addicted to fake tanning that she’s practically made of leather and she’s the color of an oompa loompa.  She’s been accused of taking her 5-year-old daughter to the tanning salon with her.  Well, it seems “tan mom” has some competition in the race to be the biggest embarrassment NJ has to offer.  Her competition?  “The Hotdog Ho”…a woman who runs a hot dog truck where you can get more than hot dogs.  She serves up her dogs in a bikini…and if you ask nicely you can get a lap dance or a side of sex.  Oh…did I mention that her boobs sag down to her knees?  Yeah…she’s a class act.  Oh…and she’s “acrobetical”…her word, not mine.  Seriously…you can’t make this stuff up.  And you guys thought Snooki and The Situation were the best NJ had to offer. UPDATE…Apparently, the Hotdog Ho is from Long Island…which is NY, not NJ. Also, she prefers to be called the Hotdog Stripper. I really wish she was from NJ.
  • Why do people think it’s ok to take their shoes off on the train.  On Wednesday morning, I sat across from a man who took his shoes off and put them up on the seat next to me…right next to my lunch bag.  It was gross…and it was also the morning, which made it even worse.  Of course, there were no other seats on the train so I had to just sit there.  But people…please understand that it’s public transportation and not your living room.  Leave your shoes on!
  • There is a woman who works in my building, but for a different company.  She’s the only woman in an office full of men and she didn’t want to share a bathroom with them.  Since we are an office full of women, she asked if she could use the bathroom on our side of the office.  We said sure.  Except…she’s always in there.  Yesterday, my coworker came into the office, put her bags and coat down, turned on her computer, walked down two flights of stairs to use the bathroom on a different floor, walked back up two flights of stairs…and the girl was still in there.  We estimate that she spends 2-3 hours of the work day in there.  We figure she’s either trying to kill time or she’s got some sort of stomach issues.  But as my co-worker pointed out this morning…if it’s stomach issues, girlfriend better get herself to the doctor!

And lastly…and most importantly…

  • President Obama’s tweet about gay marriage yesterday is the most retweeted message in the history of Twitter.  I think that’s awesome.

Now…grab the button, link up below…and have a wonderful weekend!

Random Musings Friday…

Happy Friday.  I have to be honest…last Friday was so much better than this Friday.  Last Friday I got on a plane to Georgia for a weekend of girl talk and relaxation.  This Friday…I’m at work.  It’s not even close to the same.  The good thing is that it’s the weekend and I finished getting my craft room organized last night…and I plan to spend a lot of time in there over the next two days.  There will be some amazing crafting masterpieces coming out of that room.  Either that or I’ll just sit at my desk and surf the internet.

Now…I have lots of random musings this week.  I have to make up for last week after all…

  • The grass is growing like crazy, so two weeks ago J decided to do some lawnmower maintenance and get ready to start cutting the grass.  So we took a trip to Sears…where we bought our riding lawnmower last year.  You know what…Sears doesn’t carry replacement parts for their lawnmowers.  The guy suggested we try Home Depot.  Except…our lawnmower is a Craftsman…manufactured by Sears and sold only in Sears.  Out of ten different stores, only one in our area sells the replacement parts.  J didn’t seem so flustered by this…but I was.  It just doesn’t make sense to me.  But maybe that’s why Sears isn’t doing so well.
  • We had new cable installed in the CT house.  The tech that came out was super nice and really helpful.  I was just in the middle of thinking that he was the best service tech of any kind we’d ever had at the house…until he basically told us he had been having really bad diarrhea all day.  I mean, really…do I need to know that?  I do not.  Please keep that shit to yourself…literally.
  • I was listening to the radio and the morning news woman was doing the entertainment news.  She referred to Kim Kardashian and Kanye West as Kim-ye.  She said “We are calling them that now.”  My question is…do we have to???  Bennifer was funny.  Really funny.  And TomKat was slightly clever…but you lost me at Brangelina and now Kim-ye?  Please…let’s just stop with the stupid names.  Or better yet…let’s just stop talking about Kim Kardashian altogether and maybe she’ll go away.
  • The night before I left for Georgia, I stopped into a store by my office to pick up a few last-minute things and I found a dress that I loved.  It was comfortable and perfect for the hot temperatures I was travelling to.  I took the dress to the register…where the store manager told me she couldn’t sell me the dress because the price tag was missing and it was the only one in the whole store.  I explained to her that I was sorry for the hassle, but she’d better figure something out…because I wasn’t leaving that store without that dress.  I stood there for 45 minutes and missed three trains…but she figured out the price and I got the dress.  And it was absolutely perfect for a day of shopping and visiting the peach orchard.

And lastly…my favorite…

  • Don’t you love when people push you out of the way only to discover that they are going the wrong way?  Earlier this week, a woman pushed past me while we were getting off the train and practically knocked me over.  Then she proceeded to march down the train platform…in the completely wrong direction.  The look on her face was priceless as she turned around and slunk back the right way.  A few months ago, as I was waiting for the bus, a woman cut in front of the line and jumped onto the bus.  She paid her fare ($7) and sat down…only to realize she was on the express bus to Westchester instead of the local city bus she was looking for.  She’d only been planning to go 8 blocks.  Instead, she ended up going 20 and paying an extra $5 for the pleasure.  She was very upset…but  I loved every second of it.  Maybe if she wasn’t so busy being rude, she would have realized her mistake.

That’s it for me this week.  Don’t forget to grab the button above and link up below to share your random musings of the week.  Have a great weekend…

Random Musings Friday…

Well…I’m off to Georgia for a little rest and relaxation with Ally and Everett.  I’ve never needed a vacation as much as I need this one.  I didn’t get everything on my to-do list finished.  I think I got about halfway through it.  I guess that’s good enough.  And I only managed to forget three things while I was packing.  So…you know, it was a success.

Unfortunately, I didn’t have much time to spend around here this week.  I also didn’t have much time to put together a post for today.  Although it doesn’t really matter…because I’ve had one major all-consuming thought this week and so I will tell you about that instead…

The birds are out to get me.  Remember, last week when I was obsessing about the bird flying into the plane engine?  Well, the obsession has gotten worse.  See…there was another bird incident…this time where a bird flew into the windshield of the plane.  It didn’t do damage to the plane…though the bird didn’t make out quite as well.  After an emergency landing and some Windex, the flight took off.

Then, yesterday, a reporter on the news said a bird flew into her windshield while she was driving down the highway.  I started to wonder what the hell was going on.

Then, my dad called and told me that there was a dog loose on the runway at LaGuardia.  He’d gotten out of his crate and was causing havoc at the airport.  They had to shut down the runways until he was safely rescued.  The dogs name…was Birdie.

Seriously…you can’t make this shit up.

The icing on the cake was yesterday afternoon when I was walking down the street under some scaffolding.  At first, it was really silent in there.  Then I heard cooing start.  By the time I reached the end of the block, it was a symphony of pigeons cooing.

The whole thing has me freaked out.  The birds are out to get me.  There are too many signs.

So wish me luck  that my flight goes smoothly this morning.  And have a great weekend!

Now grab the button above and link up…and please, tell me something to take my mind off the f-ing birds!

Random Musings Friday…

Here we are, back at Friday.  This week flew by…I can’t even believe it.  The weather here has been gorgeous, but we are expecting a cold, rainy weekend.  Personally, I’m looking forward to it.  It will be a good excuse to stay inside and get to all the things lingering on my to-do list.  It’s also a good excuse to lay on the couch and take naps.  I’m going to try for a nice balance of both.

So let’s move things right along and get this weekend started.  Here are this week’s random musings…

  • Why does everyone care so much about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie getting engaged?  The other day the news said that this is just like having our very own royal wedding.  Except…no, it isn’t.  These two are just movie stars…they aren’t the future king and queen of the country.  I’m not saying that when they do eventually have a wedding I won’t look at the pictures in People Magazine…because I will.  I’m just saying that I don’t understand why people are acting like this is the biggest news of the century.  It’s not.  And also…the ring is ugly.  I would think that after spending a year designing it, Brad could have come up with something a little  nicer.  I’m just saying…
  • Why was it such a big deal that Hillary Clinton went out for beer and dancing in Columbia?  The headline of the Daily News said “Swillary” or some such nonsense.  When I saw that I thought she’d gotten wasted and went out and made a fool of herself somewhere.  But all she did was go out with some of her staff, have a drink and dance a little.  Like a normal person.  Maybe I’m missing why this was such a big deal.  Or maybe it was just a slow news day.
  • I feel kind of bad for Pippa Middleton.  She didn’t choose for her sister to marry into the royal family.  It doesn’t seem fair to her that there is all this scrutiny now on everything she does.  She is a single adult and she went to a raunchy party and stayed out until 5AM.  I don’t get why that’s so horrible?  I understand the whole thing about her friend pointing a gun at the papparazzi…that was not good.  But if she wants to go out partying until the wee hours of the morning…isn’t that her business?
  • Some birds flew into the engine of a plane taking off at JFK yesterday.  One got sucked into the engine, destroying it, and the plane had to make an emergency landing.  I hate hearing stories like this a week before I have to get on a plane.  What I hate even more is when they news shows statistics about how many people have died in plane crashes caused by birds flying into the engine.  There are something like 115 bird strikes a year at JFK and I don’t remember the exact number of people who died because of these strikes…but it was enough that it freaked me out.  And now I’m actively keeping myself from looking up how often this happens at La Guardia…where I’m leaving from next week.  Please remind me why I watch the news again!

and lastly…

  • I love it when a plan comes together.  Robyn and Phil are coming to NY for a visit next month and I’ve been trying to think of something we can do while they are here to make their trip special.  Everything I had tried to plan fell through…no tickets to Book of Mormon, no Yankee tickets, no attending a taping of a TV show.  I was very frustrated.  Then I got an email…there is a company called Underground Eats that offers unique culinary experiences and the week of Robyn and Phil’s visit, UE is putting on a Breaking Bad themed dinner.  It just so happens that Robyn and Phil are HUGE Breaking Bad fans.  I immediately went to the site to purchase tickets, only to find that it was sold out.  But after a desperate email with begging, I was able to secure us three tickets!  And now they will end their trip with a very unique dining experience…and I no longer feel so bad about not being able to fulfill any of their other requests!

Have a fabulous weekend everyone!!!
