Random Musings Friday…

I started this particular Random Musings Friday post about three Fridays ago.  Then I never got to finish it.  Because that’s the way life has been going lately.  I’m either super busy or totally exhausted.  I keep hoping for things to slow down or to win the lottery, but so far neither wish has come true.  So I’ll keep hoping and keep waiting.  In the meantime, here are this week’s random musings…

RandomMusingsBadge2

  • Have you ever noticed that when you are on the phone with a customer service rep and they’ve been absolutely not helpful in any way, they still end the conversation with “Is there anything else I can help you with today?”  Anything ELSE???  You didn’t help me with anything at all!  They really need to drop the “else”.  I think I’m going to tell that to the next person who is completely unhelpful to me.
  • I think it’s pretty well accepted that while James Patterson used to be awesome, he’s basically just phoning it in these days.  Mostly, he gets other people to write his books and just sticks his name on them and collects the paycheck.  And the ones he does write alone, the Alex Cross series, are really just terrible.  My question is…why do I keep buying them???  Maybe someday I’ll smarten up and stop handing this man my hard-earned money.
  • Yesterday on the train, the woman in across from me was putting on her makeup.  She actually used eyeliner to draw a mole on her face.  I’ve never actually seen someone do that…I’m mean, outside of Halloween.  Can anyone explain the point of that?  Does she think she’s fooling anyone?  Because, to me, it looked like she just got a little smudge of something there on her face.  Is this a thing?  Do people actually do this?

And lastly…a burning question from the bedroom…

  • Do you use a top sheet on your bed?  This has been an ongoing debate between J and I for the last 12 years.  I do not like a top sheet on the bed and usually don’t put one on.  I have a habit, stemming back from my childhood when I was convinced that the monsters under the bed were going to eat my feet, of completely wrapping myself in the comforter like a burrito.  I no longer believe in monsters under the bed, but I still like having my feet wrapped in the comforter.  Having a top sheet on the bed and tucked in at the bottom prevents me from doing this.  J, on the other hand, likes a top sheet and finds it “weird” and “strange” that I have this aversion.  So, as I do with most of our debates, I leave it to you all to tell me if I’m a total freak or if you agree that a top sheet on the bed is just unnecessary.

That’s it for me.  Hopefully, I’ll be back next week.  Have a fabulous weekend everyone!

Random Musings Friday…

It’s back!  Random Musings Friday has been gone for a while, but I’ve been taking tons of notes and today I’m bringing you all kinds of random.

RandomMusingsBadge2

  • The other day, a friend sent me a text message.  It said “He was taken in at 6 AM.”  This was a continuation of the conversation we’d had the night before about her father having surgery.  But my first thought when I read the message was “Arrested!?!?  What could he have been arrested for???”  And then I realized that “taken in” was not referring to jail, but to the operating room.  I think I have been watching too many crime shows lately.
  • Can someone please explain to me the logic of wearing flip flops, a sundress and no tights with a winter coat?  There is a woman I see on the train all the time who dresses like this.  It had to get down to 20 degrees for her to finally wear proper footwear and legwear.  I think there needs to be a rule…when you have to wear a winter coat, gloves and a hat, you have to wear actual shoes too.
  • I was waiting to cross the street the other day and I overheard the conversation going on behind me.  I couldn’t help but laugh.  It was a woman and a man and the man said “Geez…couldn’t you at least have brought it in a bag?”  I was so curious as to what “it” was…until I heard “I’m pretty sure I’m going to be the only guy on the train carrying around the DVD set of Downton Abbey.”  As he walked across the street, I noticed him trying to hide the DVDs under his jacket.
  • Yesterday I saw a sign that was spelled wrong and I had to wonder how many people saw that sign BEFORE it was printed and didn’t catch the very obvious error.  I figure it was at least two…the person who ordered it and the person who made it.  Did neither of them notice?  Did they both think it was correct?  I see stuff like this a lot and it worries me about the state of education in this country.
  • And lastly…you know you are talking to your best friend when you say “Can we drive two hours with your six month old in the car to go see Foamhenge and a few other odd little things?” and she responds “You had me at Foamhenge.”  It’s a special thing when you find someone who will not only tolerate stupid crap like that for you, but who is actually equally excited about it.  Just like she was when I told her that there was a house made of headstones in her new town and she made sure we drove by it.

And that, my friends, is all the random I have for you this week.  Have a fabulous weekend!

Random Musings Friday…

This week got away from me.  I woke up this morning and was shocked to find that it was Friday.  Being busy really makes time fly by.  It also leaves very little time for me to get this post out.  So here goes…

  • I made a contribution to a charitable organization recently and as a thank you, they sent me an email with “virtual” cupcakes.  WHY???  Why would you send a person a picture of delicious looking cupcakes that they can’t eat?  It’s just mean.  I am very impressionable with stuff like that, so I’ve been craving the hell out of some cupcakes since Tuesday.  Luckily, today is a coworker’s birthday and I will finally get to indulge in a little cakey goodness.
  • Whenever a Maroon 5 song I get a smile on my face.  Not because Maroon 5 songs are so fantastic, but mostly because the sound of Adam Levine’s conjures mental images of him.  Specifically, this picture of Adam Levine.  And that picture…makes me smile every time.  Adam Levine is just really nice to look at.  Are you ladies with me on this?
  • Very often, when getting on and off the train, men will push women out of the way in order to get a seat.  Also…men will remain seated if a pregnant woman gets on and they pretend they don’t see her and let her stand.  I always wonder if this is just a NY thing or if it happens everywhere.  I also wonder if these men realize how rude they are being.

And lastly…a very important question…

  • What is the difference between a stalker and a lurker?  The other day I was on the phone with a work colleague.  While we were talking he said “Are you Fumbling Towards Normalcy?”  At first I was surprised…but then I realized that he was Googling me while we were talking.  It continues to freak me out a little when colleagues find my blog…but I put my whole like on the internet so I guess I can’t be surprised when it happens.  Also…I totally Google people I’ve spoken to on the phone but have never met, so I expect that everyone does it.  Anyway, when we finished our conversation I said “Ok, well you can go back to cyber-stalking me now.”  He was not pleased with my use of the word stalker and insisted that he was more of a lurker and that there was a big difference.  I wasn’t so sure.  I told him I would pose the question to all of you.  So…what do you think?  Is there a difference between stalking and lurking?  Also…do you Google your colleagues to find out thing about them?  And do your colleagues know about your blog or other parts of your personal life?

That’s it for me.  I’m off to go eat some non-virtual cupcakes.  Have a great weekend!

Random Musings Friday…

So, I have a sinus infection and I’m very congested.  And because I’m really smart…I’m watching Grey’s Anatomy and crying.  Which is making me even more congested.  It’s not the smartest decision I’ve ever made.  Why does this show have to be so sad?  And why am I sitting here continuing to watch it?

Anyway…this is what’s been on my mind this week…

  • Do you know anyone who continually disappoints you and yet, you still continue to make plans with them? Are you still surprised every time they cancel on you at the last minute or change things on you or disappoint you in some other way?  Because I am surprised every single time.  Am I just a sucker?  Maybe some day I will stop setting myself up for disappointment.  Or maybe, at least, I’ll stop being so surprised.
  • Is there a real reason you can’t keep your cell phone on during a flight?  Or read an ebook during takeoff and landing?  Will it really interfere with the plane’s operation? Or is it just some bullshit they hand you to make it sound official? I really want to know this.
  • What kind of scratching is appropriate in public?  Because yesterday I was on the train and this woman stuck her hand up her skirt to scratch an itch.  She was clearly scratching her leg and not her lady parts…but it was still so tacky.  I’ve also seen plenty of men scratching their junk…or their asses.  This is all gross right?
  • Is it better to have a cold or a stomach virus?  Personally, I prefer the virus.  Colds make me miserable and I absolutely hate the stuffy nose and the coughing and all of it.  A stomach virus sucks too, but at least I can still mostly go about my normal day.  Also…I usually lose a couple of pounds.  So I’ll take the stomach virus every time.

Have a great weekend everyone!!!

Random Musings Friday…

I was so busy getting ready for my trip that I almost forgot to write this post.  Once again, I’m going away and I feel like I could use three more days to get ready.  Although, I think I actually did everything I was supposed to do.  Hopefully, I didn’t forget anything.

Right now, I’m on a plane to GA…heading to the land of peaches one last time before my favorite peaches move to Virginia.  So while I do that…you guys should check out the random stuff that’s been on my mind this week…

  • What is up lately with guys wearing super tight pants?  I’ve also noticed a lot of short pants…complete with hairy ankles sticking out.  Is this a thing everywhere or is it just in NY?  I’m not excited about this trend.
  • The other day I was waiting in line at the deli and I had to wonder…does anyone actually eat head cheese?  That has got to be the nastiest stuff I’ve ever seen.  I just can’t imagine someone walking up and saying “a pound of head cheese please”…and then actually eating it.  But at the same time, I’m super curious about what it tastes like.  Has anyone ever tried it?
  • Is it wrong to eavesdrop on people’s conversations in public?  The other night I was waiting for my food and I overheard the server discussing Indian food with another customer.  The customer claimed that he didn’t like Indian food…but then said he’d “seen it, but never tried it”.  I found that entertaining…but then the server delivered what is now one of my favorite lines of all time.  She said that “gratituities” were included on checks for parties of ten or more.  Yup…gratituities.  Priceless.
  • I heard a statistic on the news this morning that smokers who live in NYC and make $30,000 spend approximately 1/4 of their salary goes to paying for cigarettes.  That’s mind-boggling to me.  I mean…how do you pay your rent if you are paying so much for cigarettes?  How can you afford to keep smoking?  I mean, I know it’s an addiction…but at some point it’s a matter of economics.
  • Is it just me or do you guys watch the same movies over and over again?  This week I’ve watched Just Friends at least 8 times.  It’s a funny movie, but it’s not 8 times in a week funny.  And yet…I can’t turn it over.  Am I the only one?

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  See you Monday.

Random Musings Friday…

I seem to have gotten my blogging groove back this week.  Along with my groove…Random Musings Friday is also back.

Here’s what I’ve been pondering these last few weeks…

  • Is it ok to tell a stranger to fix their clothing?  The other day I was walking behind a woman whose skirt was getting hiked up underneath her bag and her underwear was dangerously close to making an appearance.  So I walked up to her, tapped her on the shoulder and told her she should fix her skirt.  She was very grateful not to be flashing the whole city.  That one was kind of a no brainer.  But what if it’s something minor…like a tag sticking out of a sweater or a collar sticking up in the wrong way?  Should you mention that to someone?  Offer to fix it for them?  Or just leave it be?  What do you all think?
  • Do you think the people in the “don’t” pictures recognize themselves with the bar over their faces?  And if so, do you think they are mortified?  I was watching a piece on the news about obesity and there were shots of people walking around the street and you couldn’t see their faces…but still.  It’s got to be horrifying if you are sitting there watching TV and you see yourself being shown as the example of obese or some other “don’t”.  I’m pretty happy that I haven’t seen myself in one of those pictures yet in my life.  I consider it one of my small victories.
  • Why don’t restaurants and delis recognize the difference between Coke and Pepsi?  Are they both colas?  Yes.  Do they taste completely different?  YES!  The deli I order breakfast from basically feels that Coke and Pepsi are interchangeable.  I disagree.  I hate Diet Pepsi.  Hate it!  If I order a Diet Coke, then that’s what I want.  If you don’t have Diet Coke, please let me know and I will select something different.  Don’t just assume that Diet Pepsi is an acceptable substitute.  Geez!  Those kind of shenanigans will ruin my whole morning…and isnpire me to start ordering from somewhere else!
  • What happened to symbolism in music?  I mean, if groups like the Beatles wanted to sing about drugs they called it Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.  And Sarah McLachlan…half the time she’s using so much metaphor in her music that I’m not even sure what she’s singing about.  But lately I’ve noticed that trend disappearing and songs getting much more blatant.  Usher’s Scream comes to mind…where he sings about getting on your back if you want to scream and also about being naked.  What happened to innuendo?  It seems to crass to me, but maybe I’m just being a prude.
  • Are there actually adults who are afraid of escalators?  Or is the girl I always see at the train station just a total idiot?  I have a feeling she’s playing the role of helpless, dumb girl for her boyfriend’s benefit.  He seems to enjoy it…because almost ever night she’s standing at the top of the escalator and he’s trying to coax her to get on it while she protests and screeches about being scared.  All while standing in the way  of people trying to get home at rush hour.  The thing is…in addition to the escalator, there is an elevator and two sets of stairs.  So if you are so afraid, why not choose a different option for your descent?  I swear, some days I just want to give her a little push.

There you have it…the pressing thoughts that make me wonder and keep me up at night!

What are your random musings of the week?

No Random Musings This Friday…

Random Musings Friday is cancelled this week.  I haven’t been very happy with it lately and neither has anyone else…it’s usually the post with the lowest stats of the week.  So the musings are going to take a brief hiatus while I retool them a bit.

You might have also noticed that I’ve been taking a bit of a hiatus in general around here.  It wasn’t planned…it just sort of happened.

It’s not that I have nothing to say.  It’s actually the opposite…I almost have too much to say.  I have a ton of posts half written in my head, but when I sit down to actually write I end up staring at a blank screen.  Then I find something else to do…like watch a movie or read a magazine…and then yet another day goes by without a post.

It’s all been very frustrating and I miss all of you.

So I’m going to do some work this weekend…I’m going to write some posts and I’m going to do some much needed cleanup of this place.  And hopefully on Monday I’ll have some good stuff for you guys and you’ll all be excited to stop by here again.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Random Musings Friday…

It’s Friday again.  I wasn’t sure I’d still be here this morning.  The weather report for yesterday was something straight out of a horror show and I was convinced that by now I’d be travelling the yellow brick road on my way to Oz.  Luckily, the crazy thunderstorms produced a lot rain in my area, but not much else.  Other places had trees down and lost power and one town upstate even had a tornado.  The worst that happened to me was that I got a little wet on my way into the grocery store.  I’ll take that!

Here’s what else happened this week…

  • I was extremely impressed to see that Christian Bale went to Colorado earlier this week and visited the shooting victims.  I was even more impressed that he did it without notifying the press or having a camera following him.  He didn’t do it for the press or the recognition.  He did it because he felt it was the right thing to do.  I’ve always gotten the impression that Mr. Bale was kind of a douche…but he proved himself to be a real class act.  Well done, sir.
  • Someone else who impressed me this week was Lisa Henson, CEO of The Jim Henson Company.  Upon hearing the news that the CEO of Chick-fil-A came out publicly against gay marriage, Lisa severed the relationship between her company and the chicken restaurant.  She cited her company’s committment to diversity and then she turned around and donated the payment they’d received from Chick-fil-A to GLAAD.  While the CEO of Chick-fil-A is certainly entitled to his opinion on gay marriage, a restaurant chain is not a platform to promote your political agenda.  Chick-fil-A should have focused on selling chicken.
  • Something I’ve been wondering…why is it that when people on the train are listening to music loud enough for me to hear, it’s never music I actually want to hear.  Sometimes J will sit next to me on the train and I will be able to hear his music…but since it’s always music I like, it’s fine.  However, when it’s strangers, it’s always some kind of music that I hate.  Strange.
  • Also…I notice a lot when I read books, the characters often want to “snuggle up on the couch and watch old movies”.  It’s always old movies.  Why is it never new movies?  When J and I have a free night, we sit on the couch (we are not snuggly people) and we watch a movie…usually the newest release.  Last week we watched 21 Jump Street.  Tonight we will watch Safe House.  While I do have some favorite classic movies, when J and I watch movies together we always choose the new releases.  Are we alone in this?
  • I often order lunch from a place near my office called A+ Thai Place.  It occurred to me this week that maybe I should be ordering lunch from a place called A+ Thai Place.  It seems so…casual?  I don’t know…there is something about the name that is bothering me.  Also…my pad Thai this week tasted like vomit.  I think I’m off A+ Thai Place for a while.

That’s it for me.  I’m off to enjoy my weekend.  I hope you all do the same.

Random Musing Friday…

It’s been another one of those weeks where life just got too busy to actually sit down and post every day.  But it’s boring to keep coming to someone’s blog and reading the same “Sorry I haven’t been around” post over and over again.  So I’ve made peace with the fact that, while I’d love to be able to post something every day, it’s just not realistic.  I’ll post when I can or when I have something to say and when I’m too busy I won’t post and I won’t feel guilty about it.

That said…I do have some good stuff this week.  In light of what happened in Colorado last night, I considered not posting nonsense today…but I decided it’s probably important to post nonsense.  It’s important that we don’t let the crazy fucks who think it’s ok to go on a killing spree in a movie theater dictate how the rest of us live our lives.  So to all of those people affected by the shooting…I am thinking of you today and saying prayers for all of you.  My heart goes out to you.  There is no sense when things like this happen.  I’m very glad they caught the person who did this and I hope they make him pay.

While it still feels a little disrespectful to move on to nonsense…I think we need to lighten things up around here.  So here are this week’s random musings…

  • I have an irrational fear of fish hooks.  J likes to fish and I always make excuses of why we can’t go, because I have this fear that I’m going to get hooked in the face while he is casting.  I know it’s nuts and that it would probably be fine.  But I can’t stop thinking about it and so, for me, fishing is never relaxing.  Does anyone else have this fear?  Has anyone else ever been hooked in the face?  Am I just nuts?
  •  I was feeling a little sniffly last week, so I’ve been overdosing on vitamin C and sanitizing my hands like crazy.  Being on the subway  is always tough because I don’t like to touch anything for fear of the germs…but I also don’t like to go careening into other passengers when the train is moving.  So I have to hold on and I try not to touch my face until I get off the train and bust out my Purell.  The problem is…my nose always itches.  Every. Single. Time.  I’m sure it’s psychosomatic…my nose itches because I’m thinking about not touching my face.  But it’s really annoying.
  • I read an article the other day about a woman who shaved her head as part of her challenges on Fear Factor.  I don’t watch that show because I think it’s dumb and really…they don’t offer a large enough prize for the kinds of things they want you to do.  But I gave this woman a lot of credit.  When it came to her final challenge and they told her she had to shave her head, she absolutely didn’t want to.  She said she decided to do it, not for the money, but to teach her children that they shouldn’t be vain.  Luckily, she and her husband went on to win the money.  I wouldn’t have done it…and that is why I will never be on Fear Factor.    Well…this and that time those people had to milk the goats with their mouths.
  • I saw something on the news about a woman on a motorized scooter who attempted to ride it up an escalator.  Of course, that didn’t go well and it ended up flipping over on her a few times.  She ended up being ok, but how do you sit there and think that’s going to turn out well?  The kicker was…the elevator was only about 20 feet away from the escalator.  It takes a special kind of stupid or a special kind of lazy to choose escalator over elevator.

And lastly…

  • There are signs up all over Grand Central Station for E!’s new show Opening Act.  I don’t know much about it other than it’s a musical competition show and the winners get to be the opening act for someone else.  One of the posters says “LMFAO is looking for their new Opening Act”.  My question is this…when did LMFAO become a headlining act?  Should they be the ones that ARE the opening act?  It’s been a while since I’ve worked in the music industry…but maybe things have changed and anyone with one hit can be a headliner.  Or maybe LMFAO is hugely popular and I just don’t know it because I’m old.  Anyone care to weigh in?

Well, that’s it for the week.  I hope you all have a wonderful weekend.  Don’t forget to link up below…
