Sometimes, having a positive outlook can be really hard. You know…during those times when everything seems to be going wrong and you just can’t ever catch a break. Like for me…right now. I try to stay positive all the time, because I truly believe that positivity breeds positivity. But it’s been a struggle lately.
So I have decided to start a new weekly feature, where I take something that’s been bugging me and instead of complaining about it, I’m going to find something positive to say about it instead. The silver lining in the middle of the shit storm, if you will.
And I’m going to kick things off with the weather. I am not a fan of hot weather and I really hate humidity. I dread those days in July and August where I’m sweating the second I step out the door and my hair gets so frizzy that I’m Monica in Barbados. Well, that’s what it’s been like here for the past week and a half. I’m pretty sure that’s what it’s been like everywhere, so I’m sure you guys are feeling my pain. I’m already cranky from all my mini-disasters and the weather is just making things worse.
But I’ve been noticing the strangest thing…instead of everyone being really cranky from the weather and really surly to one another, people have been overly friendly and chatty. Everyone wants to complain about the weather and make weather related jokes, so they are striking up conversation everywhere. I’ve been chatting with people on the train, in line at the bank, waiting for the subway, waiting to cross the street…pretty much everywhere.
There are five guys working at the train station, cleaning everything and repainting the station. They’ve been there for over a month and I’ve walked by them every single day. Normally, they don’t even look up from what they are doing. But the past two days, two of them have struck up conversations with me and I’ve seen them talking to a bunch of other people as well.
I have to say, my weather related crankiness is somewhat abated when I see how friendly people are acting. So it might only be day four of a seven day heat wave and we might have to suffer three more days of this miserable, gross, nasty weather. But at least I can commiserate with people and maybe even hear a good weather related joke or two.
Now it’s your turn. Tell me what your bright side is this week…
