Have you guys heard of the PS22 Chorus? I’d be surprised if you haven’t. Those kids are everywhere. They were on the Grammy’s, they’ve performed with Carrie Underwood at her concert, they rang the opening bell at the NY Stock Exchange, they performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade…and their YouTube channel has gotten over 50 million hits.
If you haven’t heard of them, let me tell you a little about them. They are an elementary school chorus from Graniteville, Staten Island made up of about 60 fifth-graders. The program was founded by music teacher Gregg Breinberg in 2000. In 2007, Perez Hilton discovered the chorus and posted them all over his site. That’s when their popularity exploded. They started appearing on morning shows and awards shows and galas honoring other performers.
If you haven’t seen them perform, go to their website and check out some of the videos. The kids are adorable…and really talented. Their popularity is well deserved.
Most recently, the kids have been invited to perform at the presidential inauguration. It’s a huge honor for them and something that most of these kids never dreamed would ever happen to them. They were crazy excited about the opportunity…until they found out they had to pay their own way. The school doesn’t have the money in the budget to pay for something like that. But the kids weren’t deterred…they started fundraising and quickly raised $6,000.
Then Sandy happened, and just like she messed up everything else around here, she derailed the kids fundraising efforts. Not far from the school is one of the areas hardest hit in the storm and the kids knew they couldn’t ask people for money for their trip while there were people who had lost their homes and all their belongings. So all fundraising efforts were put on hold.
The kids didn’t sit by and do nothing though. Nope…they decided to take action. They got together with Phillip Phillips (from American Idol) and performed a concert online to raise funds for Sandy’s victims.
These kids really are amazing. And now they need our help. Personally, we have a soft spot for all things Staten Island…it being J’s home town and all. But I really do think this group deserves this opportunity to perform for the President and the rest of the country. So please consider donating to their cause…or at least spread the word about them. And watch their videos…you’ll really enjoy them.
