Random Musings Friday…

I wasn’t exactly planning to take a blogging vacation this week.  It just sort of happened.  It was a busy weekend and I never had time to sit down and plan out my posts for the week, which is usually a disaster for me.  I don’t do well with the pressure of trying to come up with a post at the last minute.  So I decided to take a short break.

But I’m back with some random musings…and a better plan for next week.

  • Saved right next to the Random Musings Friday button in my picture library is a really sexy picture of Ryan Reynolds.  Every Friday, when it’s time to write this post, I see that picture and it makes me smile.  It’s a very nice way to start a Friday morning.
  • J and I watched several episodes of Gold Rush on Discovery this past weekend.  The guys on that show refer to the area where they dig for gold as a “glory hole”.  They said it about 27 times per episode.  And every single time, my mind goes to the dirtiest meaning of that term and I’m left picturing a truck stop men’s room somewhere.  I wonder if the guys from the show ever think the same thing.
  • In high school, I was a math geek.  Not only was I good at it, but I really loved it.  Solving math problems gave me a thrill.  Oh how times have changed…because yesterday I had to figure something out that required me to solve a linear equation.  I was completely blank.  I stared at that equation for a good ten minutes without a single clue how to solve it.  Luckily…there’s an app for that.
  • Speaking of high school, while I was a huge fan of math, I was not quite so fond of religion.  However, it seems the nuns left quite an impression.  Certainly more than the math teachers did.  Because I’m reading Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal (which I will write more about when I finish it) and it seems I have retained far more New Testament than I did math.  Go figure.

And lastly…and quite possibly the funniest thing I’ve heard all week…

  • Pat Sajak and Vanna White used to get drunk during breaks in taping Wheel of Fortune.  That’s awesome.  I’m going to spend some time this weekend trying to find some old episodes to see if you can tell if they are sober or not.  Oooh…and maybe I’ll come up with some episodes where the contestants used to use their winnings to make purchases from the Wheel of Fortune showcase.  Those are my favorites.  There was always a ceramic dog for, like, $500 and someone would always buy it.  Thinking back, I guess it’s not really a surprise that they needed booze to get through that mess!

Ok…now it’s your turn…grab the button above, link up below and tell me your random musings of the week…

I miss the Wheel of Fortune shopping sprees – it was so funny to watch these people waste their money on such useless crap.
I asked Phil the simplest math question the other day, like ridiculously simple, and he just looked at me, stunned. Geez, just because I work in finance doesn’t mean I can do simple equations…

I kept hearing about Pat & Vanna this week, too. Hysterical! I love that show, and like our elderly friends, watch it regularly. My favorite part is that Pat is so frank about it. I adore him.

Ryan makes me watch Gold Rush, too. The first season really irritated me. They’re like a bunch of retarded dogs chasing their tails. I’m glad I’m not the only one giggling about the glory hole.

Ryan Reynolds would be a great start to every morning… if only! :)

I read that Pat Sajak thing earlier this week too. Nice. I would love to see an ep where they actually seem drunk. I was pretty in to math in high school too. I was the only one of my friend who took calculus. They thought I was lame. My math knowledge has greatly declined since then. I have trouble with long division sometimes now.

I’m your total opposite. I was and still am TERRIBLE at Math. In fact, math made me change my major in college. I was a marketing major at first and Accounting was a required class in the curriculum. I literally had a 7 in that class. Like my grade was 7, out of 100. LOL. So I dropped it with the quickness and switched to Journalism. Even the simplest math freaks me out and makes my brain leak.

Please let me know what you think about Lamb when you’re done. I loved it so much! It made me care about Jesus. Okay, that sounded bad. LOL.

OK… not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet but have you seen The Soup talk about Gold Rush?!?!? They have a segment on The Soup called “Gay Shows” [goes in line with “Let’s take some E!”, and “Let’s Talk about Chicks” “Reality Show Clip Time”, “Clippos Magnificos” – can you tell I’m obsessed with The Soup? … long story short they have a great time clipping together the sound bites of the men on Gold Rush talking about glory holes, flushing them out, and how they have to REALLY get in there to make the glory hole spirt. Seriously… HILARIOUS! You’ll have to see if E! has some clips or You Tube you and J will get a kick out of it, trust me.

Ah, yes, we’re quite addicted to the train wreck that is Gold Rush ourselves. Actually, though, I’d heard of the term glory hole in mining years ago when some friends and I toured the Dahlonega gold mines in Georgia. Yes, our minds went there too. (And comic-ed it, if you’re curious: http://www.randomactscomics.com/2008/01/31/so-totally-inappropriate/ )

I love that Pat and Vanna would drink while working. If I could get a lunchtime Marg, I totally would.

I was also good at math in high school. This past weekend I pulled out my iPhone to use the calculator. JT said “remember how our math teachers used to tell us we had to learn math because we wouldn’t always have a calculator with us?” Then we laughed. No wonder we’re math dumb now.

I can’t believe that about Pat and Vanna–but it’s pretty hysterical. If you find any clips, please post them here :)

Oh, lord… my math skills leave much to be desired. I freeze when the check comes to the table. It makes me nervous, LOL!

I have taken an unexpected break from blog reading. Sure ive been scanning but not really reading my list. Except for you of course. I don’t like to scan yours so I let them accumulate in my reader queue until I can give them the attention they deserve. And I’m so glad I did!
    1. I used to be good at math too – the Boy brought a question home from a grade 7 class that he couldn’t figure out. It took us 2 days. Shh don’t tell anyone!
    2. The Boy loves Gold Rush and the glory hole always makes me giggle too. Also those guys are idiots!!
    3. I’m so glad you are reading LAMB. I was shocked how much I knew from my Catholic upbringing too! I hope you’re loving it because I thought it was hilarious!
    4. I don’t remember the wheel of fortune showcase! That’s crazy!
    Awesome musings! Love it!
