On the 11th day of Christmas…

I originally wanted to title this post “Jesus wasn’t the only one born in December”.  That’s the line that J put on the invites to my 30th birthday party and it cracked me up.  I thought it was good enough to dust off and trot out again this year.  But I have this whole theme going with the titles and that would sort of kill the theme and…well, I think you know me well enough by now to know that can’t happen.  It is what it is…

So here we are…on the 11th day of Christmas…which is also known as my birthday.

I am a big fan of my birthday…of birthdays in general, actually.  I think it’s nice to be celebrated once a year…for people to say “I’m so glad you were born that we are going to eat cake in celebration of it”…or something like that.

I’ve been sort of dreading my birthday this year, because the number attached is a little bit scary to me.  I never really thought I’d be this old…and yet, here I am…this old.  So I made a decision while I was walking to work this morning…I’m going to embrace the day and celebrate all the years that have gone by and the ones yet to come.  I’m even going to embrace the number…and next year, I’m going to embrace the same number…and the year after that…you get the idea.  I’ve decided to continue living, but stop aging.  I think it’s a brilliant concept.

Ok, here goes the embracing…I’m 35.

I just cringed writing that.  I guess I still have some work to do on the whole acceptance/embracing thing.

You know what’s better than numbers?  Cake.  I went out to dinner with my family to celebrate the big day on Saturday night and we had a great time.  We ate at Maggiano’s so I could have their Chocolate Zuccatto Cake, which I’m now totally addicted to.  (I blame Ally for this, btw.)  A few photos for your viewing pleasure…

My parents...

Bro and SIL...we had to take 4 pics and his eyes still weren't open!

My grandfather...who was having fun...despite the lack of a smile.

My best friend E and her husband C...who also had his eyes closed!

J and me...in the worst pose ever...and again with the closed eyes!

One of only two pictures of E and I that exist outside of her wedding album...despite the fact that we've been friends for 18 years!

The special guest star...the cake!

Dinner was great.  We all had a wonderful time…well, except when the waiter said “Happy Birthday Ma’am”…um, thanks?

I also got a wonderful surprise from Ally this week…

This is a hammer...seriously. I got hammered for my birthday!

A nod to the little piece of the South I carry in my heart always...

There were also peppermint Dove candies, but J stole them the second I opened the box.

Thank you, Ally.  It was such a great surprise!!!!

And speaking of presents…I decided to choose my favorite thing to give today…a purse…

Isn’t she pretty?  I have the larger version of this purse and I get compliments on it all the time.  This is the clutch version, but it’s still pretty big…certainly big enough to carry more than a lipstick and a credit card.  It’s perfect for going out or for every day.  I adore it and I’m going to be sad to see it go.

See…I told you I was saving the best for last.  Wait until you see what I have for you tomorrow…

  1. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GIRLIE!! US DECEMBER BABIES ROCK!!! I hope you have a fabulous weekend – you have to celebrate all week!!! Don’t ever let a number get you down – I’m a 30 something myself and for a while it took some getting used to but your mind set of getting older but not aging is perfect!

    Love ya girl! ox

  2. I might have to make the 1 hour trek to the nearest Maggiano’s to try that cake. It looks awesome. HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I turned a big number this year too. Good times. I also love birthdays. I also love that purse.

  3. SO many things to say about this post…
    1) First and MOST IMPORTANTLY: HAPPY BIRTHDAY darling!!! I, personally, think that birthdays should last all month long, so I am going to drink in your honor for the next 9 days. I’m sure you won’t mind.

    2) That hammer seriously works. And I found the business card of the store where I bought it so I’m considering ordering my own. If J steals that hammer, I am going to be more than a little concerned.

    3) I’m sorry you missed out on the Dove chocolates. However, those cookies are delish. Try them with a little melted chocolate on top. 😉

    4) Proof that men are incapable of keeping their eyes open during orgasm – eyes wide shut during the consumption of Zuccato cake. Clearly, they are the weaker sex.

    5) And I want this little purse SOOOOO badly, but I’m going to post it on FB because no one reads my blog anymore. But TONS of people see my FB updates. I realize this does not gain me extra entries, but isn’t the point to get more readers? So, I shall hook you up…in hopes that if I don’t win, at least you will hook me up at the actual store when I come up in the spring.

  4. Have the Happiest of Birthdays Shan!
    35 is great…now 36? That’s a different story 😉

  5. Happy Birthday Girl! Hope it’s a great day!

And I LOVE that little purse!

  6. Happy birthday, lovely!! I hope you have a fabulous day!

  7. Happy birthday to yoooooooooooooou!! I love birthdays too – and you know what? 35 ain’t no big thang. I just turned 38 and I’m convinced it ain’t no big thang, either. 😉 Enjoy the wonderful year that is before you!

And Merry Christmas to you, too.

  8. Happy Birthday! I have a big birthday in May. That purse is super cute!

  9. HAPPY BIRTHDAY, SHANA!!! Hope your day is awesome and filled with all sorts of fun surprises. I love the idea that you’ll continue to live but not age. Awesome :)

OMG! I know that purse and LOOOOOVE it–it’s so cute as a clutch!
