On the 6th day of Christmas…

I love cards.  I love getting them and I love sending them.  The funnier they are, the better.

My favorite cards of the year are Christmas cards.  I used to search and search for the perfect cards…funny, yet not offensive.  It took a lot to find the perfect cards.  But I didn’t have kids, so photo cards were not an option.

Well, the year we got Sadie, that all changed.  I had a kid now…a furry one…and I was going to do photo cards.

I don’t know if you’ve ever tried to get a dog to stay still for a photo while wearing a Santa hat…but let me tell you…it’s no easy task.  Luckily, Sadie is the best dog ever and she subjected herself to the humiliation with only minor coaxing.

Then last year we got Sofie.  Sofie was having none of the Santa hat.  She hates to sit still and taking pictures of her is always really difficult…never mind getting her to actually pose next to the tree.  Not happening.

Last year, after two hours of trying, I gave up and took a picture of the girls sleeping on the couch.  It was cute, but not what I wanted.

This year, however, I was determined to get the perfect picture in front of the tree.  I devised a plan that involved moving furniture and I waited until J was out of the house, because I knew he wouldn’t go for it.  Then I got really creative…I tied milk bones onto the camera so the dogs would both be looking in the right direction.

First we attempted a photo with reindeer ears…

They were both freaked out and Sofie wouldn’t stay still so her ears kept falling off.  I did get a good picture of Sadie alone though…

So we ditched the ears and tried for jingle bell collars…

This was also a disaster.  They were afraid of the jingle bells and wouldn’t even move to sit near the tree.

So I gave up and took off all holiday adornments.  I was happy to just get them to sit in front of the tree….which they finally did…sort of…

Sadie looks totally traumatized in this picture.  So we tried again…

As you can see…Sadie gave up on this whole exercise and laid down.  And Sofie still wouldn’t look at me.  Also, the full garbage can in the corner was a nice touch.  And the flash was giving them red-eye.  So…again…

And finally…I got something acceptable.  I turned off the flash and went just with the glowing lights in the room…which I think gave a cool effect.  I got both dogs to look at me and sit still.  It’s not perfect, but it was as good as it was going to get!

After this little photo session was over, the dogs ate their milkbones and passed out cold for two hours.  Poor dogs!

Now the cards are written and addressed and I’m just waiting for my custom ordered Zazzle stamps to arrive today and I’ll be sending them out.  If anyone wants to be included on my list, send me an email with your address!

For today’s present, I decided to give you all the opportunity to torture your own pets or children or spouses.  Today’s recipient will get a $25 gift card to Snapfish to be used for Christmas cards or photo calendars or picture mugs or whatever other means of familiar torture you care to bestow this year.

Actually, J and I were talking this weekend and he said the best Christmas presents I ever got him were the Sofie and Sadie books that I made on Snapfish last year.  They were photo books showing the dogs from the day we brought them each home until our Christmas pictures last year.  They were really fun and easy to make and he really does love them and looks at them all the time.

Now tell me…do you dress your dogs up for the holidays?  Have you finished your Christmas cards yet?

Comments

  1. I have never tried holiday pictures with pets but I did help my sister take holiday pictures of my nephew soon after he learned to walk. We bribed him with cookies, jumped up and down, put toys in his face, and made crazy noises, but he just wasn’t having it.

Some of the best gifts I have given are creations from Snapfish!

  2. Oh my gosh, yay!! I already sent out my Christmas cards, but I need to make my snapfish calendar for next year. I have pictures of both Clover and Paisley in an elf outfit on the December page of my calendar this year. Paisley’s is hilarious because she blinked at the moment I took it, and she’s hunched over, so she looks like this horribly angry little elf puppy. I love it!

  3. We totally dress our pets up for Christmas. We just bought their Christmas sweaters a couple weeks ago. I’m trying to get hubs to upload the photos he has of them in their Santa hats, because they’re super adorable. They’re very food motivated, so they sit perfectly still and look wherever we’re holding the treat, which makes it relatively easy to get good photos of them.

  4. I love Snapfish. I get my parents calendars from there every year. Hobie HATES any sort of costume or accessory. We put a halloween costume on him once and he tried to rip it off for 5 minutes before just collapsing on to the floor in sadness. I may try again one day. He is also hard to take pics of because he always moves at the last second.

  5. OMG, getting pictures of dogs – dressed up or not – is freaking hard. And the more dogs there are, the more difficult it is. I love the shots you get along the way, but the last one is perfect… you’re right!

I do put jingle bell collars around our dogs’ necks during Christmas and they HATE IT. But it’s only for a few hours, so they have to deal with it. Sorry babies!

  6. I’m often called a freak of Christmas because I have this thing about getting my Christmas cards out the Monday after Thanksgiving. I’ve been doing it since college when I was hit with end-of-semester stress after Thanksgiving and before the Christmas break, so I wanted to alleviate some of that holiday stress. And it kinda became a thing where I was known to my circle being the first Christmas card they received. In many cases, my Christmas card arriving reminded them to do theirs, lol. Now I have a rep to maintain. 😉

  7. And to answer your other question, I have a cat, but I’m lucky I can get her into her carrier to go to the vet half the time much less dress her up for holidays, lol! So I don’t even attempt it.

  8. OMG, Shana. These pictures (and the captions) made me laugh. I’ve never had luck getting Linus (the family pet) to sit still (I think he’s still traumatized from the Halloween when we made him wear a cape). But they’re so stinkin’ cute your doggies! I LOOOOOOVE the last picture, and it’s great you got part of the tree in it as well :)

  9. Your babies look so sweet! We could never get Maya to sit still for a picture…but I might have to try, because that is a great idea!

  1. […] Whoever gets this DVD will be able to experience the magic right in their own living room.  It’s not quite as awesome as getting to see it live…but flying people in and buying tickets to the show was a little out of my price range!  By now, you should all know the entry rules.  If not, click here.
