It’s his party…

I hope everyone had a fabulous long weekend.  I certainly did and I’m sad that it’s over and I’m back at work today.

As I told you, a few weeks ago my dad celebrated a big milestone birthday.  We had a dinner and cake for him on his actual birthday, but his party was this past Sunday.  I spent all day Saturday with my brother and sister-in-law getting ready.

I had a fabulous time with them…but I have to say…my brother is a world-class ball buster.  I mean, seriously…my dad and I are pretty good at it, but my brother takes the cake.  There were moments during the day on Saturday when he was in an entirely different room and he was still giving us a hard time!  It was somewhat entertaining though.

Marisa (my SIL) and I decided that we were going to make the cake and other desserts for the party, so when I got there, we got started.  All was going well and we were halfway done…as you can see, there is one cake on the counter…when Marisa decided that my brother’s clean, dark blue shirt was far too clean.

So this happened…

Which led to this…

Which escalated until it resulted in this…

Notice the flour hand prints on the side of his face

And this…

She had flour in her ears

And, of course, this…

All jocularity aside, we were able to get the cake together and I think it turned out really well…considering neither of us had ever done a cake like this before.

It wasn't was just the angle of the photo

The little men on the cake are The Beatles.  That was the theme of the party.  My dad is a total Beatles freak.

In addition to the cake, we also spent Saturday making a scrapbook for him.  We called it A Day In The Life and we included photos of all the significant events in his life and titled each page with Beatles lyrics.  It came out amazing…and I totally forgot to take any photos of it.  I did take a photo of the mess I made…

There were Cricut cartridges and stickers everywhere.  The book turned out pretty good and my dad loved it so much that he cried when he saw it…which was nice.  That he loved it…not that he cried.

What he did not love was the crown we made him wear.

He wasn't super excited about the flashing 60 button or the beads either

As you can see, he’s not smiling.  I am though…because I thought it was hilarious.  (Like my John Lennon glasses?)

After quite a few shots of Patron, he finally smiled about his crown.

I was warned not to post these pictures here…but clearly, I ignored that warning!

My mom likes to avoid the camera, but I did manage to catch her when she wasn’t looking.

I spent Monday coming down off the sugar high from that cake and the chocolate covered “Strawberry Fields” and the red velvet “Marshmallow Pies”.  I watched a bunch of movies and was generally a bum.

All in all, it was a great party and a wonderful long weekend.

So what did you all do this weekend?  Do you like our cake?  Do you think we can give Duff a run for his money?  Have you seen Hot Tub Time Machine…because you totally should…it’s really funny.

  1. Sounds like a great party. I love the cake. My dad’s 60th is next year. I need to start working on ideas for that.

  2. It looked/sounded like a great party – I love the scrapbook idea.
And what’s the point of having a blog if you can’t post humiliating pictures of the people you love?!
    Well done.

  3. it was great. you and your sil and brother are the best. every father should have kids like you guys. you know i like to break balls but there is nothing i can say except thank you.

  4. Looks like a really fun party! Can you please plan my next one?

  5. Marisa...the SIL says:

Let me tell you that Bella is still finding sprinkles on the floor! We did have a great time…despite all the ball busting. I’d spend any Saturday baking and bonding with my SIL!

  6. Awww, looks like you had a great time! I looooove your cake–you all did a fantastic job (and love the Beatles theme). So sweet your pappa cried.

PS: I totally have the same dress :)

  7. Love your cake–you two did an awesome job! Your brother and SIL seem like a really fun and cute couple. How sweet that your dad loved the book so much, and was so touched, that he cried. Mission accomplished!! :-)
